National Championship Recap

Pat Forde

'01 Duke over '08 Kansas 72-70

Down two in the final seconds after a Carlos Boozer baseline jumper gave Duke the lead, the Jayhawks run “Chop.” That’s the play this team made famous in San Antonio when Mario Chalmers took a handoff and buried a three-pointer to force overtime against Memphis and ultimately win the national title in overtime. But Mike Krzyzewski isn’t caught unaware like John Calipari was — his defense switches the play perfectly and Nate James rises up to block Chalmers’ shot and preserve the victory. Jay Williams is named the TOC MVP. Krzyzewski is fittingly crowned the king of the college basketball three-point era, having won five NCAA titles in that time and capping it off by winning the Tournament of Champions.
